Cambuur bring an eight-match unbeaten run into their Eredivisie meeting with PSV, whose scoring power and record at Kooi Stadion make them favorites.

Cambuur vs PSV Eindhoven: In-Form Hosts Face a Test of PSV’s Title Push

Cambuur’s eight-match unbeaten run makes this a more demanding trip for PSV than the league table alone suggests. The hosts have recovered from a poor start to reach ninth in the Eredivisie, while PSV arrive third, with the division’s best attack and a chance to close the gap on leaders Feyenoord. My read is that PSV have the stronger case, but Cambuur’s recent scoring form points to a contest with chances at both ends.

The teams meet at Kooi Stadion in round 12, their first encounter since March 2023. Cambuur’s momentum is real: they’re unbeaten in eight across all competitions and have scored first in each of those matches. PSV, meanwhile, have taken seven points from their last five league games, a patchy run that sits alongside a convincing 7-0 win over Willem II. French striker Alassane Plea and midfielder Jerdy Schouten are ruled out for PSV through injury; Cambuur’s Daan Visser is recovering from a knee problem.

The numbers behind the matchup

PSV have scored 35 goals and conceded 13 in the league, compared with Cambuur’s 23 scored and 22 conceded. The table puts PSV third on 23 points and Cambuur ninth on 15. The hosts have three clean sheets to PSV’s two, while the supplied home-and-away ranking places Cambuur ninth and PSV sixth. Those figures show the difference in attacking output, but Cambuur’s recent form offers a reason to expect them to contribute.

  • Cambuur have opened the scoring in each of their last eight matches in all competitions.
  • PSV have won five of their last six visits to Kooi Stadion. The exception was Cambuur’s 3-0 victory in October 2022.
  • Each of the last 10 meetings between the sides has featured at least three goals.

Recent head-to-head results give both sides something to point to. PSV won 5-2 in March 2023, but Cambuur beat them 3-0 at home in October 2022. PSV also won 2-1 in April 2022 and 4-1 in August 2021. PSV have won nine of the teams’ last 10 meetings since February 2014, according to the source figures, though Cambuur’s home win shows the matchup can produce an upset.

How Cambuur turned its season around

Cambuur began their first top-flight campaign after promotion from the Eerste Divisie in difficult fashion, collecting one point from their first five matches. Their opening four included defeats to Excelsior, Fortuna Sittard, Feyenoord and Twente. Johan Plat’s side have since changed the tone of their season: five wins and three draws in their next eight matches across all competitions have lifted them to ninth.

Their latest league performance was emphatic. Cambuur beat Go Ahead Eagles 4-0 at Kooi Stadion last Saturday, taking a three-goal lead in the first half through Ismael Baaf, Jason Ceka and Billy van Duijl. Rafik El Arguioui completed the scoring with a team goal in the 80th minute. They also progressed to the second round of the KNVB Cup, beating Kloetinge 2-0 on October 27.

That sequence matters against PSV because Cambuur have shown they can start quickly and keep finding the net. Their five most recent league results in the supplied form guide are a draw, two wins, another draw and two more wins; the guide lists 14 goals scored and four conceded over that period. They’re level on 15 points with eighth-placed Groningen, so a strong result would strengthen their position in the middle of the table.

PSV’s attack has the edge, but form is mixed

PSV’s league position reflects their attacking quality, but the recent results are less settled. They have taken two wins in their last six games, and their midweek European trip ended in a 2-1 defeat to Club Brugge at the Philips Stadion. PSV had beaten Porto 1-0 on October 20 for their first Champions League win of the campaign. Against Club Brugge, Nicolo Tresoldi and Carlos Forbes scored either side of Kodai Sano’s 54th-minute equaliser.

There was a very different picture in the Eredivisie last Saturday. PSV beat Willem II 7-0, with seven different players scoring. That result underlines the scale of their threat: 35 league goals make them the competition’s highest-scoring team. Peter Bosz’s side are third on 23 points, level with fourth-placed Twente and two behind leaders Feyenoord. A win could move PSV to the top, depending on other results.

The away side’s recent league form has been uneven, and the injury absences of Plea and Schouten remove two options from Bosz’s squad. Still, PSV’s record at Kooi Stadion and their depth of scoring give them a clear route to victory. Cambuur’s unbeaten run and strong home display against Go Ahead Eagles make a clean sheet harder to call.

Prediction: Cambuur 1-2 PSV Eindhoven

The case for goals is stronger than the case for a low-scoring stalemate. The last 10 meetings have all cleared 2.5 goals, PSV bring the league’s most productive attack, and Cambuur have scored first in each of their last eight matches across competitions. Both teams to score looks a reasonable pick, while PSV remain the likelier winner given the gap in league points and their head-to-head record.

The source’s listed prices are over 2.5 goals at 7/25 (1.28), both teams to score at 11/25 (1.44), and a PSV win at 2/5 (1.40). It gives PSV to win with both teams scoring at 6/5 (2.20), and a 1-2 correct score at 17/2 (9.50). The accompanying tips box lists PSV to win with both teams scoring at 17/2 (9.50), which conflicts with the earlier price; readers should treat the displayed odds as inconsistent.

A 1-2 scoreline fits the balance of the matchup: Cambuur’s scoring streak should test PSV, while the visitors’ greater firepower and strong record in Leeuwarden make them the pick to take the points. The decisive question is whether Cambuur can make their early pressure count before PSV’s attack finds its rhythm.
