NEC’s home struggles meet Omonia’s European ambitions in Nijmegen, with both teams’ scoring and defensive records pointing to a tight, high-scoring contest.

NEC Nijmegen vs Omonia Nicosia: Europa League Preview and Prediction

NEC Nijmegen have the sharper recent result in Europe, but their wider form makes a home win against Omonia Nicosia far from certain. The Dutch side’s 4-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb showed what they can produce; a long winless stretch and poor home record show why confidence in them remains qualified.

Omonia arrive with a stronger league position and a defense that has conceded only six goals in the Cyprus First Division. Yet their European campaign has already swung from wins over Celta Vigo and Celje to a defeat, while their away form has recently faltered. The balance points toward a close match, with NEC narrowly favored and goals at both ends a credible expectation.

The matchup in numbers

The league table gives Omonia an edge: they sit third in Cyprus with 15 points, while NEC are 13th in the Eredivisie on 11. Their attacking returns are nearly identical, with NEC scoring 17 league goals and Omonia 15. The sharper difference is at the back. Omonia have conceded six times and kept four clean sheets; NEC have let in 19 and recorded one clean sheet.

That defensive gap matters, but it doesn't settle the question. NEC have seen both teams score in six of their last seven matches, and they’ve conceded first in five of their last six. Omonia’s recent schedule has also produced goals: five of their last seven games had at least three. The available trends suggest neither side can rely on controlling the match from start to finish.

NEC’s European progress comes with a domestic warning

Back in the Europa League for the first time since 2008-09, NEC entered the competition after finishing third in the Eredivisie in 2025-26. Their opening 5-0 loss to Juventus exposed the scale of the adjustment. A 1-1 draw with Levski Sofia was a step forward, and the 4-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb gave Dick Schreuder’s side its first points in the League Phase.

That European win remains the outlier in a difficult run. NEC have won only once in their last 11 matches across all competitions, dating back to late August, and have gone two games without a victory since beating Dinamo. Their latest setback was a 1-0 defeat to Heerenveen.

Home advantage offers little reassurance. NEC’s performances at Stadion de Goffert have been a long way from the home form that helped drive last season’s success: they’ve gone seven straight home matches without a win and have won just once in their last nine there. Schreuder will be keen to lift the mood over the next two games, with the international break approaching and the club’s leadership able to assess the team’s direction during that pause.

Omonia have a European milestone in sight

Omonia returned to the Europa League after two seasons in the Conference League, both of which ended in knockout playoff exits. Henning Berg’s team began this campaign with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo, then beat Celje 3-0. Those results raised the prospect of a push for a guaranteed place in the last 16.

The early momentum stalled: Omonia went three matches without a win before beating AEL Limassol 2-0 at the weekend. They now have a chance to win their first three matches in a major European competition for the first time. The challenge is complicated by their record against Eredivisie opposition, having lost three of four previous meetings.

Their away results tell a similar story of momentum interrupted. Omonia failed to win any of their first three away games this season, then put together three consecutive road victories before losing to AEK Larnaca. They’re capable of building a run, but the latest defeat leaves questions about how reliably they can carry that form into Nijmegen.

Late goals have also shaped Omonia’s European fixtures. Their three Europa League matches have featured two goals scored and two conceded in the final 15 minutes. That pattern, alongside NEC’s tendency to concede first and struggle to shut teams out, leaves room for the game to change late.

Form guide and likely game pattern

The last-five form record is mixed for both teams. NEC’s sequence is two draws, a win, another draw and a loss; Omonia’s is a win, a draw, two defeats and a win. Each side has scored freely enough in that sample—nine goals for NEC and eight for Omonia—but each has also conceded eight.

In the Europa League, NEC have one win, one draw and one defeat from their first three fixtures. Omonia started with two wins before losing their third. That gives the visitors the better competition record, while NEC’s win over Dinamo offers evidence they can compete when their attack finds its rhythm.

Prediction: NEC Nijmegen 2-1 Omonia Nicosia

NEC’s European results have improved since the Juventus loss, and the home side’s win over Dinamo shows it can turn an open game into a useful result. Omonia have the better defensive numbers and a stronger league position, but their recent away defeat and uneven form make a narrow NEC victory plausible. The pick is NEC to win, priced at 36/50 (1.72).

A clean sheet looks less likely. NEC have gone 19 matches, including friendlies, without one, while both teams have scored in six of their last seven games. BTTS – Yes is priced at 4/7 (1.57).

Tjaronn Chery has contributed directly to three of NEC’s five Europa League goals so far. A goal or assist for the midfielder is priced at 9/10 (1.90). With both teams prone to conceding and Omonia often involved in late swings, the strongest read is a narrow home win in a match that stays competitive.
